‘Straight’ Is Not A ‘Gay’ Orientation: Vinay Pathak
By Pallab Ghosh
Vinay Pathak, who started his career with Deepa Mehta’s ‘Fire’ has become a prominent face ever since with his impeccable acting in numerous films and television shows. ‘Bheja Fry’ was a turning point in his career which took the actor to the heights. Recently, Vinay was in the city to promote his latest film ‘Straight-Ek Teri Meri Love Story’. The film hits the theater at a time when Bollywood is waking up to the issues of homosexuals and films like 'Fashion' and ‘Dostana’ making brisk business. “I request the audience to see ‘Straight’ and decide for themselves, I am confident the audience will appreciate the film”, said Pathak.

‘Straight’ is about the character Pinu Patel, played by Vinay who runs an Indian restaurant ‘Gaylord’ in London. “My character is of a simple and extrovert man who suffers from an inferiority complex and feels he is a laughing stock in the society as he is 40 years old and still a virgin”, smiled Pathak who said the character of Pinu has a lot of shade which he enjoyed doing. “Honestly, it is an unique character as I have never played anything like this before. It was a wonderful experience to work with my co stars in the film”. The story takes a dramatic turn with Kamlesh, a cook whom Patel hired and is a stand up comedian at his restaurant. On the same day he hired Renu (Gul Panag), as his new cashier. Renu, a young student of art, is also a passionate caricature artist. The story takes a new turn when Patel finds himself caught in a dilemma about his sexual preferences as while working with Kamlesh and Renu at the restaurant he discovers he was attracted to both of them. “Puzzled and confused Patel seeks advice from his foster brother Rajat, who tells him he can find out the truth only if he sleeps with a woman. Pinu sets off on this new mission, trying to find a woman, who could help him unravel the mystery that hounds him. Something strange happens and there lies the climax of the film”, said Pathak. “I won't disclose the story any further as it would spoil the charm of watching the film”, grinned the actor who was seen quite excited promoting the film. The film is being directed by Parvati Balagopalan and produced by Shipra Morakhia. Gul Panag and Sidharth Makkar are in the other major roles.
Apart from ‘Straight-Ek Teri Meri Love Story’ ready to release on 20 March there are whole lot of films lined up to release later this year which include ‘Raat Gayi Bat Gayi' (SRK fame), ‘Pappu Can’t Dance Sala’, ‘Mumbai Cutting’, ‘Antardwand’ and ‘Mumbai Chaka chak’.
