Stories we would not want to hear twice
I remember in this blog I wrote something about a man (to be precise), the former Java coffee House boss John Wagner who was jailed for 15 years for allegedly defiling underage girls.
He only served for eight months before being released after a successful appeal.
Just the other day (less than a month ago) his conviction was quashed over what the judge termed as insufficient evidence. I wonder how insufficient it was and I would either be bothered if he bribed his way to freedom. What I care so much about is how such misguided moves reflect on our judicial system. I don't intend to impute that the man was guilty but this whole process was questionable. First, why did the judges lock him for 15 years?(Can get someone to answer that?).
More reason why I went back to this case, is some disturbing news from Eldoret and Kerugoya.
This involves high school students-on one case, five boys (imagine)
allegedly raped a form Two girl in turn and they were recording this heinous act(most likely having more fun as the girl scream and desperately asking for help). Ok, they were arrested, appeared in court but released on 100 Ksh bail waiting another hearing. They have so far denied the charges. The other one involves three girls - I am not sure if they are lesbians or what the heck the cult they belong to. Two of them made some sexual advances to one, when she turned down their requests, they beat the crap out of her. She had to be admitted at a hospital due to the injuries.
They were also arrested together withe their school head. I know it is chilling for most who have children in boarding schools. Yes I know it is.
But what is chilling to me is whether the two cases will be treated with the importance they deserve... or the victims will get justice... or whether these two will turn out to be others -with insufficient evidence.
We have to take our children to boarding schools and feel safe. We don't want to imagine they do anything else apart from acquiring knowledge. Who will save that innocent vulnerable child from such acts?
