Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich will hold a news conference to discuss whether he’ll run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Ted Stevens, who is under a federal investigation.
The meeting with reporters was scheduled for later Wednesday.
Begich has been courted by the top Democratic leaders to challenge Stevens, who is being investigated over a home remodeling project. Stevens is the nation’s longest serving Republican senator.
Begich has taken several trips to Washington D.C. to meet with top-ranking senators.
Begich is the son of Nick Begich, who was representing Alaska in the U.S. House of Representatives when his plane disappeared over the Gulf of Alaska in October 1972.
He and others on board _ including then-House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, D-Louisiana _ were presumed dead.
