Statue politics in Andhra Pradesh
The art of statue politics, articulated and mastered by UP chief minister Mayawati, is moving towards Andhra Pradesh where nearly600 statues of former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who lost his life a year back in a helicopter crash, have been unveiled in different corners of the state during the last some months.

That Reddy was a popular leader was undisputable. But that does not mean that so much money should be wasted by erecting statues in different parts of the state. The money could have been spent productively. With over one lakh rupees spent on each statue, the money spent on the statues could have been spent on improving the hygiene of Hyderabad and the rest of Andhra Pradesh.
There is nothing wrong in erecting a statue but there should be some limit to this madness. Instead of unproductive statues, YSR supporters and loyalists in the Congress should have planted saplings and ensure that these saplings become trees. So, therefore, even if you plant one lakh trees or one crore trees, it can be an eco-friendly celebration to remember YS Rajashekara Reddy's legacy.
The statues are being unveiled as part of the YSR's son Jagan Mohan Reddy's tour in the state to pay tributes to those who ended life in the aftermath of YSR's accidental death a year ago. But, a year after his helicopter crashed in the Nallamalla hills of Andhra Pradesh, YS Rajasekhara Reddy is everywhere in Andhra Pradesh in the form of statues.
