SP MLA Amarmani, 3 others get life-term in Madhumita murder case
A special court in Dehradun sentenced life imprisonment to former UP minister Amarmani Tripathi and three others in the connection with Madhumita Shukla murder case. The court also sentenced life term to Amarmani's wife Madhumani, cousin Rohit Chaturvedi and the contract killer Santosh Rai in this case.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on all the four convicted. Another accused Prakash Pandey, who was with Santosh Rai, was acquitted for because of no sufficient evidence against him.
Further, District and Sessions Judge V B Rai slapped one-year additional imprisonment to Amarmani, the sitting Samajwadi Party MLA, for wrongful detention and threats to Anuj Mishra. Amarmani had detained and forced Anuj Mishra to claim before the court that he was married to the Madhumita.
According to the report, Madhumita, who had an affair with Amarmani, was pregnant when she was murdered four years back. Police found her body at her Lucknow flat on May 9, 2003 on the request of Madhumani, Amarmani's wife.
Earlier, the CBI had urged the court to award death penalty to all the accused but the court said in the judgment that the case was not the rarest of the rare. The court pronounced the sentence to the four in just five minutes. On the other hand, the family members of Madhumita expressed dissatisfaction over the quantum of sentence. Madhumita's sister demanded capital punishment to Amarmani.
Amarmani was present in the court with three other here accused. His lawyer Vijay Vikram said that they would file an appeal in the High Court against the judgement.
It was a long and stressful fight for Madhumita Shukla's sister Nidhi Shuklaagainst the strong political leader. Amarmani was minister in the Mayawati government when Madhumita was murdered. Later, he joined Samajwadi Party before a trial of strength in the state assembly in the same year.
On the demand of Nidhi Shukla, the case was transferred to the CBI and CBI arrested Amarmani when Nidhi alleged that he threatened Nidhi Shukla, who had started a campaign for fair trial in this case. Later, the Supreme Court transferred the case to Dehradun to ensure a free and fair trial.
The state units of BJP and Congress in Uttar Pradesh have welcomed the court'a judgment against SP MLA Amarmani Tripathi. However, the Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has said that he will stand firm to back his party MLA to fight the legal battle in higher court.
