Souvenir photos are “filthy propaganda”…

POLITICS. .

When a photo of one of the Mavi Marmora “peace activists” dressed in an Islamic Jihad outfit and holding a machine gun appears on Internet websites, Israel’s use of the photo as proof of the non-peaceful intentions of those “peace activists” is “filthy propaganda” according to the Palestinians.

Do they ever listen to themselves? What exactly was the scandal they made out of Eden Abergil’s Facebook album? The cases are like two peas from the same pod.

Islamic Jihad: Israel exploited photos

Following publication of photos showing Turkish activists in Islamic Jihad uniform, terror organization says Israel exploited souvenir photos as ‘filthy propaganda,’ is determined to keep activists safe

Islamic Jihad slammed Israel after photos were published showing armed Turks standing by Islamic Jihad members.

“The occupation took advantage of the souvenir photos that were published on websites as filthy Israeli propaganda against the solidarity activists, to defeat their attempts to break the blockade (on Gaza),” said Islamic Jihad official Daoud Shihab to Palestinian news agency Maan.

Shihab emphasized that the various factions of the resistance “are determined to preserve the lives of these activists.” The aim of the factions, he said, was to get the activists out of the Gaza Strip back to their own countries unharmed, therefore they are “keeping them away from all danger.”

The activists in the photos took part in the “Peace Flotilla” which anchored in Al-Arish port in Egypt, and entered the Strip via the Rafah crossing. Pictures from their visit were posted on the Al-Quds Brigades site but were soon removed. During their time in the Strip, the Turkish guests visited some Islamic Jihad posts.

‘Organized propaganda’

Shihab praised the Turkish activists and noted they acted from “natural human desire to identify with the besieged Palestinian nation, which suffers death, annihilation and abuse at the hands of the Israeli occupation which kills children, abuses prisoners and makes life miserable for citizens.”

He added that the activists’ solidarity visit aimed to “express identification with the besieged, with the rights of Palestinians and with the resistance.”

Another response from the Palestinian factions, also published by Maan, said this was “organized Israeli propaganda against the solidarity activists.” The photos were published, it said, as part of the war Israel is waging against the aid trucks – “a war which began with the killing of American activist Rachel Corrie and continued to the killing of the activists on the Freedom Flotilla a few months ago.”

The Maan news agency published a summary of reports in the Israeli press and one of the photos released on the site in which the Turks are seen armed and wearing the uniforms of the military wing of Islamic Jihad. The caption said Israel is exploiting the publication of the photos of the Turkish activists while Islamic Jihad said they were photos for souvenir purposes only.

The exact same case can be made for Eden Abergil’s photos set up on Facebook. In my opinion, both cases are despicable. If Eden Abergil’s Internet photos were fair game for use as “proof” of Israeli oppression, then the Internet photos of a Turkish “peace activist” dressed as a terrorist are just as fair game.

The Turk in the center of the “souvenir photograph” is the same man photographed on the Mavi Marmora holding a ceremonial dagger and dressed in white martyr’s clothes prior to the Israeli boarding of the ship (see photo below).

Making the claim that the photo of him dressed as an Islamic Jihad member indicates his true feelings regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is certainly justifiable, given the available evidence.

Looking through the Israeli papers in Hebrew and in English, I can find no threats made to the “peace activists” by any Israeli source, so I guess the Islamic Jihad statement that they’re “determined to preserve the lives of these activists” will be used down the line to “prove” how successful they were—unless, of course, they get hit by a bus in downtown Cairo or Istanbul on their way home—then the bus driver will be an “Israeli collaborator” and the so-called peace activist will become a “martyr”.

I won’t even comment on the inappropriateness of the use of Rachel Corrie’s case while a lawsuit brought by her parents is still being heard in an Israeli court.

The short version of this is: if you post pictures on the Internet, anyone can make any use of them they feel like. When you’ve done the same thing yourself, you have no right to condemn others for doing the same thing, just because it makes you look bad.

In both cases, this one and the Eden Abergil photos, the posters got exactly what they deserved—exposure as very stupid people.

Note to the Turk in the picture: If you don’t want to be identified as a terrorist, don’t dress like a terrorist, don’t act like a terrorist and don’t consort with known terrorists. When it looks like a duck, acts like a duck and is found in the company of other ducks, the greatest likelihood is that it’s a duck.
