Somalia's Al-Shabaab Ban School Bells Because They Sound Too Christian

POLITICS. .

The ultra-conservative, totally uncivilized, extremist militant group Al-Shabaab continue to drag Somalia further into the depths of ignorance and darkness. Some of the things they have forced Somalians to do would be laughable if it were not for the fact that the poor people of that country are being subjected to some incredibly demeaning and ridiculous rules and regulations all based on strict, Shariah law. Some are so far-fetched one has to wonder what they are basing it on, because even though I have not read the whole of the Quran, I can almost guarantee that they don't exist. Like school bells- you know, the ones that ring to let students know classes are over. Well, as it turns out, those ignoramuses that call themselves al-Shabaab seem to think the school bells sound far too similar to Christian church bells, so they've decided to ban them from schools in Jowhar town.

Teachers and a school headmaster in Shabaab-controlled Jowhar town, some 90 km (56 miles) north of Mogadishu, said an Shabaab member had ordered schools to silence their bells because the sound was too similar to those in Christian churches.

"We were called by Sheikh Farah, the head of al-Shabaab's education, and he told us that we can't use bell sounds from now on. He said any school heard using bell sounds after now will be brought to Islamic justice," a school teacher in Jowhar told Reuters by telephone.

A local headmaster confirmed the report and added that Shabaab had informed his school that it would begin explaining to students the significance of Islamic Jihad.

The problem is that al-Shabaab and other militant Islamic groups are now in control of major parts of the southern part of Somalia and Mogadishu, the capital, which means that they can force these bans on other areas outside of Jowhar, and I'm sure they will. And once they start forcing people to comply, it's a hop, skip and a jump to brainwashing these kids into Islamic Jihad. I'm actually surprised they allow female students to get an education, although I'm sure that too will eventually go by the wayside as they join the likes of the Taliban who for years prevented women from educating themselves.

I keep wondering what they will ban next, as the fatwas keep getting more and more bizarre and more and more frequent. They've already banned bras for women, music, TV sports, food programmes from the UN, women have now been forced to wear veils, although I'm sure the burqa will eventually be mandated. Now school bells. What next? I'd say women, but they need them to bear more potential suicide bombers, although they probably would if men could bear children.

I would laugh, it wasn't so pathetically sad for the Somalians.
