Sex is an American.
That is the view from outside. Nothing the Americans do sexually will surprise anyone looking at America from outside.
Coming from a society where no TV station will air an episode of Friends because of the sexual content, I am surprised by the spiel some Americans displace when the subject is raised.
Coming to America, young men are warned about American women thus: they are too forward. They do not pretend. They will tell you what they want and how they want it. Beware because those who jump in never return. For young women, they are simply told that American men are nasty as nasty can be.
Ironically, the young people outside America are working very hard to be like Americans in the sex department. They copy the same mannerism. They mimic the same expressions. And who would blame them. If it happens in America, “God’s Own Country,” it must be a good thing.
Even before satellite TV became common across the world and brought America movies into households, American romance novels were feeding the young minds about love and sex. The culture police did not read so it remained relatively safe for young people to read novels like that. Few parents who were aware of the wares peddled by the likes of Nora Roberts were fooled by young kids who ripped off novel covers or replaced them with covers of books by local authors.
A young Nigerian man went home to find what he called ‘a proper wife’ after failing to meet his replica of an ideal wife in America. He stayed in a luxury hotel in Lagos and had family members and friends bring potential brides to him. He chatted with potential brides and made his assessment on whether to ask them to make a return visit. One particular girl came in that left an indelible mark.
