SC Woman Confesses To Killing Her Babies

Two mothers, one white, one black, both living in South Carolina, both responsible for one of the most heinous crimes possible- killing their own young. In frighteningly similar acts, the only difference is the year in which they committed their horrific crime.

In 1994 23-year-old Susan Smith, a young white, divorced mother of two strapped her 3-year-old and 14-month-old sons Michael and Alex into their car seats in the back of her car, released the emergency brake, and then watched as the car slowly drove into a lake until it submerged. Initially, the tearful mother claimed an unidentified black man had carjacked her car, we later discovered that she was the one who had killed her own babies for her own selfish, wicked reasons. Apparently a man she was dating, the local eligible bachelor, had broken off their relationship because he did not want to play father to two kids that were not his own. Yes, she had a messed up, unhappy life, but to kill your own flesh and blood for any reason, let alone because a man broke up with you because of them, is downright evil. She is currently in jail serving out a life sentence, although she will be eligible for parole after serving 30.

Jump forward to 2010 and the very similar crime by 29-year-old Shaquan Duley. In this case, Duley smothered with her own two hands her 2-year-old son Devean, and 18-month-old son Ja'van in a motel room several miles away from where she lived with her mother and a 5-year-old daughter she spared. She too strapped her sons into their car seats and drove to a boat ramp where she pushed the car into the water. She then pretended she had been in an accident, until it was discovered that this was far from the truth.

According to her attorney Duley is remorseful, as if this should be an excuse for her actions.

"She's tearful, as anybody would be under these circumstances," defense attorney Carl B. Grant said after a brief hearing. "She's been very sad, very remorseful about all of this stuff, all of the allegations."

Duley's reason for killing her own progeny, however, is different from that of Susan Smith.

Duley, who is unemployed, told authorities she smothered the boys after a fight with her own mother, who badgered her about her failures as a parent and inability to provide for her family financially. She first told investigators the boys drowned after her car plunged into a river early Monday morning.

"She truly felt, 'If I don't have these toddlers, I can be free,'" [Sheriff Larry Williams] Williams said.

Free? Do these people not think about these things prior to getting themselves pregnant? And with her large extended family, would it not have been better to seek help. Her mother, Helen Duley has asked people not to judge her daughter,saying

"There is a deep hurt. This is a very dark time in our lives," Helen Duley told WLTX-TV in Columbia. "I'm asking people not to judge her for what's she's done but to understand that we all have problems and we never know when things might get out of hand. That's why it's important not to keep things bottled up in you, but to let somebody know and out of this tragedy, we feel like somebody will be blessed because if you have a problem, please seek help."

Yes, we all have problems, but we don't kill family members no matter how deeply hurt we are. At least those of us who have some semblance of a conscience.

When the children were found in the submerged car, there were bruises on the 2-year-old's body. A struggle, it seems. So while the baby boy fought to stay alive, the mother who gave him life, in the first place, violently took it away from him. She had no right.
