Saudi Cleric al-Habadan Wants One-Eyed Niqab For Women
No countries can rival Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Iran or Egypt for the truly asinine comments that usher forth from the mouths of clerics. I have finally reached the point where nothing surprises me anymore. As the fatwas become increasingly bizarre, I have to laugh in wonderment that there are people who ponder such things, and actually have the guts to say such outrageously stupid things in public. And stupid they are.

This time out of Saudi Arabia, Muslim cleric Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan has decided that all women in the Kingdom should continue to wear the niqab (the full Islamic veil) but not with the customary revealing of both eyes. No, he wants the good women of Saudi to walk around in their niqabs with only one eye showing. In other words, the women will look like a cyclops , although in this case the eye would be on one side and not in the middle of the forehead like the giant cyclops of Greek mythology. I wonder which eye they would have to choose.
He believes that as long as women are allowed to show both eyes, they will be inspired to wear makeup, because women wear makeup for the sole purpose of seducing men. At least that would seem to be what he is intimating, as though that would discourage women not to wear makeup. How stupid can one get? One doesn't need makeup to be seductive, and most women don't wear makeup for that express purpose, we wear it to look our best.
I'm surprised he hasn't actually told women they must wear a burqa, although that will probably come soon enough.
I would love to sit inside the head of one of these men to witness exactly what their thought processes are. Do these men sit around wondering how best to subjugate womankind? Too bad they don't put their brain power, if they have any at all, into solving far more important matters and being a better example to the people of their nation. Sheikh Habadan apparently has great influence n Saudi Arabia, so all these ridiculous fatwas do have an impact on the religious people of the country.
I guess we will eventually have one-eyed niqab-wearing Saudi women walking around Riyadh some day.
