Saudi Arabia is experiencing a patriotic high. Saudi media is beeming with pride. Saudi Arabia's armed forced are courageously fighting against Yemeni Hawthi rebels who have outrageously attacked the nation. Or so Saudi propaganda goes. . .
Saudi Arabia's air force recently bombed north Yemen aiming its missiles against Hawthis. Hawthis are a nothern Shia sect of Yemenis long neglected by the central government.
Sunni fundamentalist Saudi Arabia resents any Shias and fears an Iranian hand on its southern border. Saudi media now claims that Hawthi rebels have attacked Saudi Arabia. But his is unfounded. Hawthis have no problem with Saudi Arabia unless Saudi Arabia attacks, directly or indirectly, them. And the Saudi state has been doing that by funding the central government's attack against its own northern citizens.
Thus Saudi Arabia is provoking the Hawthis. And it is not even clear if the Hawthis attacked Saudi Arabia first in this circumstance. The Hawthis have long been a neglected people and now they just want autonomy and peace. They should have that. If provinces want to break away from a nation - particularly a country like Yemen with a central government who authority does not extend much - they should be allowed to part company.
And the Saudis are the ones firing the first shots here. All that sad, one thing that is very frustrating is the way Saudi media is treating the Saudia "retaliation" against Hwathis. As is Saudi Arabia's army is so courgeous against some awful and powerful foe. The propaganda is delusional. And the Kuwaiti army has offered help.
These two nations do not have armies worth a damn and could not stand up to Saddam. They are posing pretending their armies are effective and as if the Hawthis are so skilled. Here are these awful Hawthis that the Saudi army feels so brave going after:
Do they not look like children? And, trust me, if the Hawthis started a irregular war against the Saudi state they might win (and more to them!).
