Police in India say 16 people were killed when an overcrowded jeep crashed into a truck outside Mumbai.

State police official Pravin Patil says the jeep was filled with members of a family traveling to a wedding party. The dead included three children.

It was unclear if there were any survivors.

Police say the jeep was speeding when it crashed into the back of the truck early Sunday on a highway outside the western city of Mumbai.

The jeep was dragged by the truck for nearly 10 kilometers (6 miles) before the driver realized what had happened.

Police say they are still investigating the accident.
