Republicans To Read Constitution On First Day of Congress
Here's a novel idea: reading the document you actually swear to uphold.

On the first day of the new Congress, or the first day of business actually, the new Republican House majority will usher in the Congress by reading, in turns, on the floor of the House the Constitution of the United States. The first time in American history such an act has been done. Republicans are so eager to read in front of C-Span and for many of them it will be the first time they've read anything in years. And some are just learning how to read. All together: con-sti-tu-tion.
Past generations were literate enough to not bother with such gimmicks and post-New Deal the Constitution simply has not mattered. It will be no different this time.
There are certainly some ardent "constitutionalists" in Congress who truly believe in the founding document. But the GOP leadership has simply re-branded itself and exploited the mantle of liberty and the Constitution to pretend it actually cares. The Republicans have been here before: 1995. The promised small government only to be run out of office a decade later after unprecedented increases in spending, including the largest expansion of entitlements in four decades.
Not only will they not restrain the state but will further erode constitutionally secure rights in the name of "national security" as the neo-con wings of the party is ready to always run rough-shot over the Constitution for purposes of "security theater".
So ignore this silly symbolism, it will be like detritus on the Republican agenda for a massive expansion of the illiberal National Security State and an inevitable return to normal ways of Big Government Conservatism.
