An alleged former child soldier and Guantanamo detainee facing life in prison says he hopes to become a doctor and live a normal life in Canada, a news report said Monday.
Omar Khadr, 21, a Canadian citizen, said he has fond memories of attending school, auto shows and visiting a zoo there, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.
The CBC submitted six questions to Khadr and said his handwritten answers were conveyed through his lawyers. They were reviewed by the U.S. military.
When asked what he would like to tell fellow Canadians, Khadr reportedly said: “Not to fear me. I’m a peaceful person and to give me a chance in life.”
Khadr, the son of an Egyptian-born, suspected al-Qaida financier, was just 15 when he was captured in Afghanistan in 2002 and accused of throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. special forces soldier.
He is among the first detainees scheduled to be tried before military commissions set up to prosecute terror suspects at the isolated naval base in Cuba.
