Juan Pablo Angel scored on a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining and the New York Red Bulls secured a 2-2 tie with Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.
It was Angel’s 17th goal of the season, breaking the franchise record held by Adolfo Valencia, and was set up by Real Salt Lake defender Carey Talley’s foul on New York midfielder Seth Stammler in the 80th minute.
The tie pushed the Red Bulls (11-10-6) closer to clinching a playoff berth in the MLS Eastern Conference.
They gained one point with the tie, giving them 39, three ahead of fourth-place Kansas City with just three matches to play.
Last-place Real Salt Lake fell to 5-13-9 overall in the Western Conference standings and the tie eliminated the club from all playoff possibilities.
Real Salt Lake drew first blood in the 22nd minute, when Chris Brown headed home a fine cross from Chris Wingert.
The Red Bulls tied the game in the 49th minute, when rookie Francis Doe took a pass from Angel and dribbled past two defenders for the game-tying goal.
But Real Salt Lake grabbed another lead when Kyle Beckerman tallied in the 75th minute.
