You get to watch them on TV and hear about the latest developments through the radio, the juicy tidbits spilling out on tabloids. No one used to dare shout their status all over the world but it’s all out in the open now. It’s considered peculiar, unheard of or plain immoral. People have always been aware of this matter though they did not command as much attentionuntil now.

The truth shall prevail and the “secret” must be revealed. Nothing triggers the imagination (and boosts TV ratings) more than two girls kissingthink Britney, Christina and Madonna in the MTV Awards, Calista Flockhart and Lucy Liu in “Ally McBeal”, and Whoopi Goldberg and Margaret Avery in “The Color Purple” (a film shown in 1985).

In the Philippine setting, Desiree Del Valle’s short-lived same-sex wedding to Elaine Crisostomo in USA prompted instant media feeding frenzy for weeks. From total obscurity, the latter was shoved into national consciousness because of the explosive confession of ex-wife Desiree in an interview shown in TV Patrol (Side comment: TV Patrol, a supposedly hard-hitting evening news program, has become home to shocking revelations from teary-eyed actresses. How come they are sacrificing the integrity of the show to give way to rumors?). Even crooner DJ Alvaro and award-winning sexy star Aleck Bovick did not escape media’s prying eyes. A few years ago, they did the rounds of TV talk shows to, perhaps, confirm (?) their very special friendship. It all began when Aleck's manager contacted DJ to write and produce songs for the actress's planned debut as a recording artist. The result was "Baso ni Maria" (roughly translates as “Glass of Maria” which used to be number two on the Original Pilipino Music chart of a popular radio station), a novelty-type number with a few mild double meanings. In the course of working on the song, the two became friends and started hanging out together. Their tight friendship was mistaken as romantic attachment when the singer planted a full kiss on Bovick’s lips on national television. In fact, some newspapers carried alarming headlines like, “Lesbianism now in vogue”. Add the fact that rumors have been going around that Lindsay Lohan and her girlfriend Samantha Ronson is tying the knot soon (which was deemed untrue by the Daily 10 show in the US). Are they going to follow in the footsteps of famous talk show host Ellen Degeneres and girlfriend Portia? Is the sudden surge of homosexual relationships among movie stars an indication of conservative societies’ preparedness to accept this kind of relationship?

It’s puzzling that these celebrities chose to love someone from the same sex when they could practically choose from a sea of hunks, models and wannabes in the small world of showbiz. It’s practically a meat market out there, providing temptation in every form, size and package. Moreover, showbiz personalities cannot expect their personal affairs to be kept under wraps since they’re “public property”. Tongues are wagging and controversies are stirred at a mere friendly display of affection. Showbiz is such a finicky business that screens the private lives of those who enter the lions’ den. Bearing this in mind, actors and actresses will have to think twice about engaging in homosexual relationships. But what can I say? Love is not exclusive to heteros.

Each of us has certain queerness that, in one way or another, makes us somewhat different from the rest. However, being a devout Catholic, it is another thing altogether. We might see two girls holding hands inside a mall (maybe even cuddling if they had the audacity) and we can give two sides of a coin. You might say that they are seriously “violating God’s commandments” or maybe an argument in context: “Adam was made for Eve and not for Steve” (though this is more applicable to the male species).

Indeed, the Bible expressly states that God created only MAN and WOMAN

; therefore, the third sex should not exist in our society today. Perhaps, I shall leave the decision on your hands on whether such a relationship will be tagged as normal.
