President Museveni's brother General Caleb Akwandwaho, popularly known as Salim Saleh recently declared his wealth to the inspector of government. In his briefing to journalists, he referred to his wealth as "modest" wealth referring to himself as "broke".
He said amassing of wealth by a few individuals in a "a poor" country like Uganda was "dangerous", noting that it was the educated in the country who were grossly corupt and denied claims about him of being the richest in the country.
In his own words, the General is quoted saying, “I am a poor man. I am just Gen. Saleh. I am not super rich like people have said. I am a lumpen”.
Among the possessions he declared to the Inspector of government, are:
- 9 square miles of land in bulemezi & kiruhura
- 42 acres of land in Njeru & Entebbe
- 2,000 pounds in HSBC bank (UK Bank)
- shares in a security firm, Saracen.
- earns Shs. 9.5million as presidential advisor.
A man of high level scandals among which is being implicated in a UN Security council report on the plunder of DR Congo, purchase of junk helicopters from Russia and involvement in the illegal purchase of shares in Uganda's largest bank.
The reaction of Ugandans on his claims include one posted by Patrick that says, "What a joker, the likes of Gen Salim Saleh have really taken Ugandans for fools."
Accumulation of wealth among a small group of people with a big part of population wallowing in poverty, is causing animosity among the population and would indeed be dangerous, recently witnessed in the riots. But now that our leaders are openly coming out against illegal accumulation of wealth, the vice may soon be history.
