Power Situation in Nepal
Nepal is totally depended on hydro-power, as days goes by the demand for power is increasing whereas the production of power is not sufficient.
The Power situation is still better during the rainy season when the rivers have water. But from autumn as the rains stop and the river water decreases the shortage of power intensifies.
It is hard to imagine a Capitol city like Kathmandu has no power for over 12 hours per day during Spring. This situation keeps going on till Summers.
Only the monsoon bring with it rain which again fills the nearly drying rivers and the power situation improves.
Only if many of the big projects gets started right now, it will still take 5 years for the power situation to improve. Actually Nepal's hydro-power potential if properly tapped may allow it to earn foreign exchange.
I went to a remote site ( Mailung Khola ) although access road has been built still had to walk all the way as the only bus service was suspended for some disturbances. One can easily imagine the kind of hardship the local people have gone through when there was no road.
It is a beautiful spot where the river Mailung unites with Trishuli river. Here 6 hydro- projects are on way.
Hope projects like this illuminates Nepal in days to come
