Human remains have been discovered in the Ka’u (kah-OO’) area of the Big Island where a man disappeared Saturday while picking opihi (oh-PEE-hee).
Hawaii County firefighters recovered shredded shorts, a bag to collect the small mollusks and human remains with what appear to be shark bites.
The cause of death is unknown. Hawaii County police say an autopsy is scheduled.
Police have not confirmed whether the remains are of 58-year-old Nathan Labarios, who was reported missing Saturday afternoon by friends.
Labarios, who was camping with friends, was last seen leaving to pick opihi.
