Pets: Entertainment or Responsibility?
Russ is a two year old Pekingese cream-colour dog, whom I got the chance to meet on Tuesday. Russ is, with no doubt, the most well-behaved dog I have ever met; He follows instructions real nicely, and during the whole time I spent with him, I did not hear him bark once. Talking to Russ, I noticed that his left eye was missing. Feeling sorry for the little fur-ball, I asked his new owner about it. She then told me a story, a very shortand very disturbing one explaining what happened to Russ’s eye.

While living with his previous owners, Russ had obviously had a nasty eye infection, which was not treated and led to the loss of the left eye, but then the owners did not want to have a one-eyed-dog, so they gave him up to an animals’ shelter. In other words, the dog did not only have to endure losing an eye due to negligence, but was also kicked out because he was not so “perfect” anymore.
Listening to similar stories, ones that I have even written about here before; I become more and more convinced that there are lots of people in this community who are still not ready to own animals as pets, and when they do, they think of their animals as methods of entertainment, and not as responsibilities which need to be cared for and treated with love and respect.
In Russ's case, the story had a happy ending; Russ did find a good new home, and an owner who is definitely better than the previous ones, but will this be the case for all other abused animals?
