Party says Go, Yeddy says No
Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa is on the brink of losing his chair. Just a few weeks back, Yeddy was on a high – the party had won a series of elections under his leadership. And the challenge from dissident MLAs who were hell-bent on pulling him down, was staved off.
But the wily JDS leader Kumaraswamy was hell-bent on bringing Yeddy down and his weapon this time, were the various scams of Yeddy. Land scams and deposits of mining money were enough to make the party high command decided to come down hard on Yeddy. After the BJP successfully managed to force the Congress to take action on Messrs. Kalmadi, Chavan and Raja, the party was on a moral high. But the Yeddy affair has severely embarrassed the BJP.
What moral right does the BJP have to tackle the Congress, when it cannot take action on its CM, who faces serious allegations?
The Chief Minister on his part has defiantly refused to resign and has handed out veiled threats of pulling down the Government. Religious leaders have come out in support of Yeddy and have threatened the BJP high command that the BJP will lose the dominant Lingayat community vote, if it drops Yeddy.
The BJP high command is in a bind. If it doesn’t take action, it will become a laughing stock in Delhi. Also, Yeddy’s rivals in Karnataka may intensify the dissident activity. But if it removes Yeddy, then he may bring the Govt. down with him, thus ending the BJP’s first South bastion.

The Karnataka issue has resulted in a rift between the Left and the BJP and thus giving an escape route to the Congress in Delhi.
It is time that the BJP decides what it wants. Does it want to be known for its moral standards and its image in the eyes of the public? Does it want to consider the long-term or remain short-sighted, in an attempt to retain power?
The BJP should call Yeddy’s bluff and throw him out of the party. Once that happens, it is unlikely that many MLA’s will support him – after all, who wants to lose power? Even in the worst situation, the BJP should be ready to sacrifice its Government rather than compromise on a serious issue like corruption.
In the next 24 hours, we will know the fate of Yeddy and also the fate of the people of Karnataka, who are caught between the Yeddys, Reddys and the Swamys!!!
