Pakistani Cab Driver Makes $40, 000 by Fare-Meter Scam in New York
A Pakistani taxi driver Wasim Khalid Cheema has set a record of earning fraudulently in the cab history of New York, as told by news stories on Yahoo and a number of other news sites. Cheema, through tempering with the cab’s fare-meter, made an extra $40, 000 by overcharging passengers in six months.

Cheema is said to have made over $11,000 for the month of July 2009 alone, while another driver who shared Cheema’s cab earned less than $5000 for that period. Cheema overcharged close to 600 passengers by setting the fare-meter at inappropriate codes, charging the rate for sub-urban areas instead of those for in-city parts, where he drove his passengers around.
Cheema’s fraud was eventually caught when officials reviewed the GPS records of his cab. His hack license has been revoked and he has been fined $500 by the authorities. It goes without saying that Cheema has also added to the bad reputation generally owned by Pakistani immigrants in the developed west – something that makes things difficult even for good Pakistani when they move to live among foreigners.
