BREACHING THE armistice for the second time in less than a week, the Pakistan army opened heavy gunfire on an Indian border post in Tangdhar region, of north Kashmir today (May 15).

Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) and mortar bombs were used targeting a forward Indian post in the Tangdhar area last evening, within a span of 15 to 20 minutes, which fell well short of it.

As per the army sources, no casualty has been reported in the firing, but it is being considered as a major violation of the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LOC), which has been in force since, December 2003.

"This was not a cover firing for any attempt to push in terrorists, but it was targeted straight at the forward Indian post," the sources said.

The firing by the Pakistani troops across the LOC comes close on the heels of Pakistani rangers breaching the ceasefire on the International Border (IB) in Samba sector. Earlier this week, in which eight people lost their lives while dozen others sustained bullet injuries.

Lt Col Anil Kumar Mathur, spokesman of Indian army, said, "The Indian army did not retaliate and there were no casualties. It was an unprovoked firing by the Pakistani army and it was the clear violation of the cease-fire between India and Pakistan since, 2003."

He informed that a meeting has been scheduled between Indian and Pakistani commanders to lodge a formal complaint and resolve the matter cordially.

The frontier has been largely quiet since, 2003 cease-fire between India and Pakistan, which was followed by a peace process, in 2004.

Here it may be mentioned that just a few days back Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and Pakistani ranger’s traded heavy fire near the IB in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir state as the rangers gave covering fire to a big group of Pakistani terrorists trying to sneak into Indian territory.
