PAIN: It's not that bad either

LIFESTYLE. .

PAIN ;ITS NOT THAT BAD EITHER

The oxford reference dictionary puts pain as "a strongly unpleasant feeling caused by illness or injury ,a mental suffering ,an annoying or boring thing ".In the Webster's ,"a distressing sensation" is added to its meaning in addition to others. It can be approximated with torture, misery ,agony and anguish to name a few. However the synonymous approximations seem ephemeral rather more ethereal because as a word "pain" carries more weight and is more encompassing than any other word in itself. Our sense organs five of them to be precise are our windows to the external world. It includes nose to smell, eyes to see, ears tohear ,togue for taste and skin to feel. Pain is the only common sensation felt by all five . it recognizes no boundaries and makes itself felt everywhere with full force .

PAIN ;ITS NOT THAT BAD EITHER

Scientifically speaking pain is not a true sensation in itself because unlike other specialized sensations which are picked up by various receptors, pain sensations are picked up by naked free nerve endings. However it signifies potential or actual tissue damage. Pain can be somatogenic signifying a perturbation of the body or it can be psychogenic pertaining to perturbation of the mind . Multiple classification systems have been proposed for pain as are the multitude of theories to explain its mechanism. Pain is unifying in one aspect that whatever be the actual reason behind a particular type of pain ,the physical and emotional planes in which the manifestations lie in are all too similar. It makes people wince , shiver& frown,it brings in the goose bumps .From the financial aspect if we see in America 61 billion dollars are lost to reduced performance and lost productivity due to pain and associated symptomology .Pain management has progressed by leaps and bounds to such an extent that it has evolved into a distinct speciality . The mushrooming number of pain management clinics is an indicator in this direction. Already in Australia and China it is being taught as a separate subject in medical schools and similar trends are on the anvil in this part of the world.as well.

Lot of negativity is associated with pain ,rightly so to an extent .On a physical plane it signifies suffering ,it torments ,causing rise in pulse and heart rate, blood pressure ,unwanted musle contractions and spasms ,disturbed sleep patterns to complete loss of sleep ,loss of appetite etc . Emotionally it brigs in sadness ,fear, anxiety ,loss of interest, to full blown depression . It makes life miserable if it stays long and turns chronic. We as humans hate pain. It pains us to see others in pain too .It is ingrained in our very innocent self to dream of a place that is totally ambient, pain free, without sufferings and agony . At times we may try to do the impossible too. However what we are sometimes ignorant about is the very nature of the pain that is always protective .It protects us from an actual ,potential or an imminent harm .Many of our reflex actions are pain modulated like removal of our hand on touching a hot object . Condition of patients with diabetic or other neuropathies[diseases involving nerves which carry sensations including pain ] in which their feet develop large ulcers without a tinge of pain , subsequently without patients knowledge .finally they land up in amputations . Similarly various psychogenic disorders like chronic depression ,anxiety disorders manifest as some forms of physical pain . Here again pain proves to be protective ,its more or less an escape phenomenon ,an unresolving emotional conflict ,manifesting as physical pain to lower down the burden on over taxed conscious mind .Pain brings in the awareness ,it shifts the focus from less important things to those that need our immediate and actual attention .It can be our best friend ,however with a bitter language .It makes us more of ourselves .

Have we ever thought which is the strongest force that propels us to do or not to do a particular a thing ?have we ever pondered what motivates us ?some wise person has rightly said " pain is a predictable motivator". It motivate s us to change ,our particular action ,our behaivour ,our memory . Contrary to the multitude of human desire and ambition for power, wealth, comfort , supremacy, most of our actions revolve around two things ,either to avoid pain or to get pleasure . In fact knowingly or unknowingly all the externl forms of our deep felt desires culminate into these two things . Our memory circuts are formed this way too . Things that give pleasure are pursued and those giving pain are avoided. However to know the difference both the feelings are to be present . one cannot imagine a world free of all pain ,then the pleasure will seem to exist .Pain is a necessary stimulus that allows and nourishes us to grow . As goes another saying,"what won"t kill you will surely make you stronger",pain strengthens ,pain consolidates ,pain enforces a change ."When the pain of staying same is greater than pain of change then we will change ". Next time we feel pained by the suffering of another person ,agony of another being ,by not being honest,we feel pained by a fallen tree, a polluted river ,a dying lake ,think of changing ist yourself then the surrounding environs .Be happy u are live still and have a chance
