Oscars Bombed Worse Than Before

POLITICS. .

Oscar should stop seeking to appeal to a "young demographic" because in doing so they only dumb-down the show and fail miserably in seeking to be "hip" but also "Oscar classic" and instead coming off being staged and an offense to genuine old-school class comedy, but end up being just like a poor unfunny version of MTV's Movie Awards (an actually enjoyable award show).

That is what happened last night when the Oscars were hosted by two no-bodies. I won't even mention their names expect to say one of them was in Spider Man (but not Spider Man) and the other was in some movie where she is royalty but does not know it until high school when her long-lost grandmother tell her (you know, your typical plausible plot). While the chic is pretty attractive and did a decent job in a very difficult, thankless job, her co-host is a pompous poser who fancies himself James Dean and thinks he's witty and has charm. A complete obnoxious phony, as Holden Caulfield would say. Who was so awful and overplayed the whole casual feel by failing to even look into the camera as if he is too confident to bother with formality.

And the worst thing for the Oscars is that this silly ploy failed in its task: overall viewership was down by 9.9% and youth demographics was down too by 4.5%! The actually lost people seeking to play to the young, which explains how futile this effort is and undermines the very tradition of the show for no benefit.

Chris Rock years back was part of the same pointless gambit. But he also was awful and incredibly not funny. Chris Rock is to Oscars was Charlie Sheen is to church! Not that's comedy!

Look the Oscars are an old school act that should be one night were the tasteless, class-less whoreish cesspool that is modern Hollywood is reminded of its illustrious Golden Age decades back when actual talent mattered and the town was a dedicated to true art and was a more thoughtful and exclusive town, and the Oscars should be that one night when people bid respect to that era and its classic films and seek to maintain a detritus of that spirit for just one night before Lindsey Lohan ruins it again. When Hollywood actually seeks to behave decently one night, just one night!, in the last one event rooted in the old past which has otherwise been overturned and trashed. That's the Oscars, or at least what it should be.

So the producers should stop trying to make it contemporary and "new age" and just return the show to its traditional theme without the patronizing jokes and pandering.

Oscars need to stop trying to pander to people who do not care, but just do the show for those who care who'd appreciate a more classical variation.

You knows? Maybe the audience for that kind of old school show is bigger then they think and people will watch then.
