Only In Egypt
The well known Facebook group, 'Only in Egypt' has made it to TV. Apparently, the master mind behind such a group gets credit for its 27plus thousand members and the countless pictures that convey mockery and cynicism at people's mistakes and responsibilities.
Now sure, some are funny, sure some require public attention in hopes of reactionary reform. But having a TV interview with him and congratulating him on the success of his group was a bit...too much.
The thing is, I am the first in line to accept my country's faults and criticize and complain. Partly because it frustrates me, but mostly because I just want to voice my opinion. But I can't help being struck with guilt when it sounds like it's my country's fault. I'm not the most patriotic citizen, but I like Egypt, with all it's crooked buses, smoggy skies, noisy congested streets and nosey citizens.
I like it because I'm willing to overlook these things, and enjoy the awesome parts of the country. Because I refuse to believe that these things are truly, only existent in Egypt. Those who try to pass it as such, I believe are doing the country a great injustice.
I instantly had an impulse to create a counter group with the same name, and post all the beautiful, oriental, and unique scenes in Egypt.
The thing is, call me a hopeless romantic patriotic Egyptian, I think Egypt ROCKS! It has soul, and lots of it, and there's the good the bad and the ugly, like every place else.
I condemn those who highlight the ugly, because although the beautiful might be harder to see, it's still, astoundingly beautiful, and is what deserves the credit, no the other way around.
