Old People are in trouble…can we do something?

POLITICS. .

Population is aging in most countries today though the implications of aging are more serious for developing countries like India where there are problems of earning from assets in old age, where credit and insurance markets are poorly developed and where there is no tradition of extra familial welfare institutions. With a growing trend towards nuclear family setup and the associated decay of the extended family structure, the vulnerability of the aging population is increasing.

As we say old age is the last stage of the life. In this stage they want some peace and security. The old age people face many problems both inside and outside the home. Old people are the backbone of the family. As old people think their children are their old age security. They aspect their children to take care of them but their children having modern cultural values are more or less nuclear family oriented where as the older people carry their old cultural values. They can’t able to adjust with their children. This often creates the intra-family conflict. The children are most concerned about their next generation and think the older people are the burden in the ways of their progress.

In the present socio-economic culture, money becomes the important factor. Everyone is running after money. It even becomes more important than life and relationship. The dominance of economy in society gradually makes people greedy and selfish. As we can notice that the children always aim to inherit the property of the older persons and they give importance to them till the property is inherited.

The old age people face many health problems. They generally become sick, cannot function any work properly as they loose their sense of capacity. But in the very fast life of the modern society, we have no time to help them. They face difficulties in everywhere such as bus, train, standing in a queue etc. With problems increasing for older people, old age suicide rate is also increasing. Now the old age problem becomes the national issue. It is true that our government has started many schemes to help them. We must change our mentality and way of thinking towards them.
