Oil Spill Incident Near Aqaba
Jordanian authorities rushed last Thursday to try and contain an oil slick which was discovered by teams from the Royal Marine Conservation Society (JREDS) near Aqaba on Thursday morning. The source of the oil spill is yet to be determined, as more focus is being geared towards containing the pollution, and finding out the affected area, which is reported to be a few kilometers in the southern beach.

“A source familiar with the incident told The Jordan Times that he saw snorkellers emerging from the Japanese Gardens dive site covered in oil Thursday afternoon.
The source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, said the spill was caused by a pipe malfunction while a tanker was offloading oil.”-The Jordan Times.
The incident’s impact on marine life is not determined yet, as it is still being investigated, but needs to be targeted as soon as possible.
