The Blackberry is the quintessential gadget on Capital Hill (I know personally, I interned on the Hill) with both member of Congress and their staff walking around with them.
Barack Obama is no exception. He is known to consistently use his Blackberry to communicate and through the often insulating effect of campaigning, Obama used his Blackberry to communicate to the outside world where his friends kept him well-informed.
Obama was known to send quick messages back and whenever the Chicago Sox baseball won, he would simply send back "SOX".
But given security concerns, a President Obama will most likely have to give up his Blackberry. Not only does the Secret Service worry about hackings, but under a Congressional act any presidential correspondence must become part of the public record. So unless Obama wants ever to be able to read all his e-mails one day, he needs to give it up before his swearing in.
President Bush use met with the same predicament and ended his e-mail correspondences.
Obama though does hope to be a technology savvy president by being the first to keep a labtop on his desk. His office might allow him to end up using e-mail, but not responding. Therefore it could escape the definition of 'presidential correspondence'.
But the Blackberry will still most likely be barred anyway.
