President Obama is scheduled to meet with the Tibetan resistance leader the Dalai Lama next week, and, naturally, this has irritated the Chinese in the wake of recent U.S.-Sino tensions over American arm sales to Taiwan (which China refuses to recognize as independent and claims the off-shore island).
The White House has dismissed a Chinese request that the meeting be canceled. The Chinese foreign minister stated the Beijing is opposed to "the Dalai Lama visiting the United States and US leaders having contact with him." Adding: "China urges the US... to immediately call off the wrong decision of arranging for President Obama to meet with the Dalai Lama... to avoid any more damage to Sino-US relations."
The president will meeting with the Dalai Lama on Thursday and in an effort to appease the Chinese will not meet the Lama in the Oval Office, but, instead, in the White House's Map Room.
The Dalai Lama left China for India after a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese occupation. The Dalai Lama now claims that he no longer seeks independence for Tibet, but 'meaningful autonomy'.
I have no respect for the Lama, I think he is a phony, media-whore, celebrity worshiper who has nothing insightful to say. I think Jack Nicholson said it best in 'Anger Management': 'How can somebody who weights 300 pounds teach anyone about self-discipline?'
And its incredibly obnoxious that he is treated with such a guest of honor and reverence here in America, but, of course, given American culture that is nor surprising. Does any genuinely thoughtful person find this guy amusing? I mean, look at this 'wisdom':

Wow, what genuine and what a great way to live abstaining from one's most powerful desire! I mean, really, why would anyone want to waste an evening listening to this buffoon. Just because he has an accent does not make him insightful!
