The governors of New York and Oregon are scheduled for surgery Saturday.
New York Gov. David Paterson is to undergo cataract surgery in Manhattan, while across the country, Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski is scheduled to have his gall bladder removed after an infection was diagnosed this week.
Paterson’s spokeswoman, Risa Heller, says the governor, who is legally blind, will undergo the procedure at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The cataract was discovered when he underwent a laser procedure on his left eye May 20 to relieve searing pain from acute glaucoma.
Doctors performed the same procedure on Paterson’s right eye several days later to prevent the spread of the condition, which is a buildup of fluid pressure in the eye.
The cataract could not be removed during the glaucoma procedure last month, so the outpatient surgery was scheduled, Heller said.
Paterson is expected to resume his public schedule Sunday, Heller said.
Kulongoski, 68, is to have his surgery at Salem Memorial Hospital.
The governor had been scheduled to attend a Western Governors Association meeting in Wyoming this weekend.
Instead, Kulongoski will spend Saturday night in the hospital and is expected to be out of the office most of next week.
While Kulongoski is under anesthesia, Secretary of State Bill Bradbury will act as Oregon governor.
