No Young Female Hockey Players for U-18 Event
Unavailability of any young female hockey players has caused Pakistan to drop its plan of participating in the 3rd Women’s Junior Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) Cup, reported The Express Tribune. The news is an indicator of lack of motivation among Pakistani girls in playing sports.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had set up a training camp for preparing players under 18 years of age for the event that starts in Bangkok (Thailand) this summer, i.e. June 4 to 12, 2011. To PHF’s disappointment, most of the players arriving for recruitment in the junior team turned out to be over 18 years. While the federation had called for at least 31 players, only 19 players turned up. With an incomplete squad, the plan to participate in the U-18 female hockey event had to cancelled.
For those living in Pakistan, however, it won’t come as a surprise, knowing that female participation in sports isn’t encouraged, particularly in these later teen years when girls either focus on education or, in most lower social classes, just preparing to get married (if they haven’t already). But we can surely hold the administration of educational institutions responsible for not encouraging their young female students to live beyond books and fashion trends.
