No Jail For Pakistani Couple In Dubai- Sex In Car Ruled Private Place

Dubai seems to be quite often headlined in the news for some rather bizarre and often silly reasons, most of which are usually related to their very archaic, stringent anti 'displays of affection in public' laws. Some are understandable like the unmarried British couple, Vince Acors and Michelle Palmer, who had been warned once and then were arrested after they were caught in a sexual act right there on a public beach. Although jail-time for such an infraction is way out of line (a hefty fine should have sufficed), they were incarcerated in 2008 just the same. Others, like the brief kiss between two other Brits -Charlotte Adams and Ayman Najafi- at a local restaurant is just downright ludicrous. And to be jailed for a kiss is absolutely unbelievable; but there they have been since March.

I'm sure that will be the last time Charlotte, Michelle or Vincent or any of their friends and family will ever visit Dubai. Ayman happened to be working there, but I'm sure that too will be short-lived. But in spite of all the troubles and the never knowing if you will violate some stupid law in Dubai, the tourists and expats keep on coming to either work or have fun in the sun. And they keep on getting into trouble, although some with savvy lawyers have had their butts saved, on occasion. Like a married Pakistani couple who decided to have a go at it in their car who were initially sentenced to the obligatory one month in jail and deportation for public indecency. Problem is, the car had tinted windows and they won their appeal.

Their lawyer, Majid Al Kabban, confirmed on Tuesday that the ruling by a lower court, which had sentenced the two to a month in prison and deportation, was overturned last week.

The couple successfully argued their car should be treated like a private house.

Their lawyers said that because of the car's tinted windows, a policeman who raised the charge could not have seen what the couple was doing inside.

They're lucky they were married. Had they not been, the tinted window, private house defense would never have worked. I'm not sure why they wouldn't have preferred the comfort of their own beds, but to each his own. They're lucky they won't be spending a month in prison.

But in light of all these jail terms for public indecency and other Dubai religious oddities, the British Embassy apparently now has a "don't do" list for anyone visiting the UAE.

No dancing.

No drinking.

No sharing rooms (if you are unmarried).

Dancing? Had no idea about that one.

I'm sure the list also includes- don't touch anyone.

If that isn't enough to convince you to holiday in Spain, I don't know what is.
