A woman found dead in her apartment with her malnourished infant twins died of undetermined natural causes, according to the Kansas medical examiner’s office.

The body of Virginia Njoroge was found Nov. 16 after a neighbor reported that she had not seen the woman for several days and could smell a foul odor coming from Njoroge’s apartment in this Kansas City suburb.

Emergency crews found Njoroge’s 3-week-old twins, both malnourished, lying under a bed. The baby girl later died and the boy was placed with relatives.

Njoroge, 36, had been dead for several days and her body was too decomposed to determine the exact cause of death, Johnson County deputy coroner Michael Handler said.

However, he said foul play had been ruled out, and there were no drugs in Njoroge’s system or evidence of complications from her pregnancy.

Njoroge was originally from Kenya. The Organization of Kenyans in Kansas City raised about $11,000 to send the bodies of her and her daughter to Kenya on Wednesday for burial.
