The U.S.-led coalition says forces hunting for a Taliban leader have killed “several militants” in central Afghanistan.

Coalition forces were searching compounds in Saydabad district in Wardak province on Tuesday, when militants used grenades, machine guns and small-arms fire to attack.

A coalition statement Wednesday said its response included an airstrike.

The Taliban leader allegedly is behind an attack on a coalition convoy June 26 in Saydabad. The attack killed an Afghan interpreter and three troops.

Separately, police say a civilian vehicle struck a mine in Khost province Tuesday, killing four people and wounding three. Police official Yaqub Khan says the dead included a 2-year-old.
