Mystery or Dystopia

POLITICS. .

There are many young people in our society today, who want to pursue their higher studies in the fields of media and communication. However, prior to “pursuing” anything, it makes commonsense to understand the nature and structure of those fields and why they are so. Could they be precursors to a subtle dystopian society that we are experiencing today? According to MIT professor Noam Chomsky,

“you want to study them the way, say; a scientist would study some complex molecule or something. You take a look at the structure and then make some hypothesis based on the structure as to what the media product is likely to look like. Then you investigate the media product and see how well it conforms to the hypotheses. Virtually all work in media analysis is this last part—trying to study carefully just what the media product is and whether it conforms to obvious assumptions about the nature and structure of the media.”

On a slightly different yet related note, when you compare the worlds of George Orwell’s 1984 and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, an interesting analogy emerges. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance.

After reading these two supposedly “dystopian fictions” over the weekend, the recent news reports spread across mainstream and non-mainstream media has left us wondering.

The mystery of mass bird deaths: It all started when residents of Beebe, in the US state of Arkansas, woke to find thousands of dead blackbirds strewn across roads on 1 January 2011. Then, in Louisiana, about 500 birds - including starlings, cowbirds and redwing blackbirds - rained down from the skies. Other bird and fish die-offs - as these mass deaths are called - were also reported as far away as Japan, Thailand, and Brazil. Experts insist that what is going on is not that unusual and that the incidents are unconnected. Such events are usually blamed on bad weather, disease and poisonings. The initial focus of the investigation was on known diseases, epidemics and viruses. In the case of the Arkansas blackbirds, it was initially thought that the deaths were caused by some weather phenomenon - a microburst, or strong downdraft of wind, perhaps. But the die-off, which took place on New Year's Eve, was most likely caused by fireworks, local experts say (BBC).

Jonathan Sleeman, director of the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin, said his office has investigated 16 mass bird deaths in the past 20 years. “This is a bit unusual but not unique…until the sky turns red and there’s a plague of locusts, this event is not that unusual,” Sleeman said of the blackbirds (CNN). The mysterious deaths of 100,000 drum fish about 125 miles away were thought to be unrelated. Similarly, no explanation was reached on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand, where vacationers were shocked when hundreds of dead fish washed ashore (Fox News). In the latest of a string of mass animal deaths, 10,000 cows and buffaloes have died in Vietnam. Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed the news this week that more than 10,000 cows and buffalos died nationwide due to harsh weather conditions (Huffington Post).

Could these “mysteries” be explained by Jeane Manning and Nick Begich’s 1995 book titled Angels Don't Play This HAARP: Advances in Tesla Technology?
