Fanatical Zionist and anti-Islam polemicist Daniel Pipes is always coming up with some new eccentric theory about the "Islamist threat" to the West and rehashing them to ignorant audiences most of whom are already predisposed to anti-Islam prejudice.
Pipes' new theory is Muslim polygamy. Yes laws that allow polygamy with further the Muslim "demographic threat" and it - and not the "veil" or minarets - will radically alter Western society and seal the end of "Jane Austin's" England.
This is so stupid and it is astounding anyone could take it seriously. First, Pipes never identifies any laws that allow polygamy in Europe. Because there are none. And even some Muslim nations disallow polygamy, such as Turkey and Tunisia.
Secondly, Islam does allow polygamy up to four wives but puts such stringent restrictions on them so as to practically negate the very allowance. Men are allowed to take second (or more) wives provided they 1) have approval from their standing wive(s) and 2) can treat them equally. A wife naturally jealously guards her husband and the overwhelming most would never consent to a second wife and equality between wives is a difficult standard to achieve. This is why a second Qur'an ayat dealing with polygamy states that one will not be able to treat wives equally. So as to say that even though you are allowed if you can treat them equally, you will not be able to do so. Thus while in theory you may marry more than one, in practice you will violate the Qur'anic command of equal treatment and thus you should not marry more than one.
Because it is natural to love one above all, because wives will not consent to it, because polygamy is expensive, and because the Qur'an states that one will not be able to meet the standard for permission, polygamy have never been widely practiced amongst Muslims whether it is legal or illegal.
Polygamy in the contemporary world is probably more of a phenomena amongst radical Mormons than Muslims. Polygamy is far from the mainstream in Muslim nations, it is a fringe element which is unidentifiable in society and I have never seen an example of it; and whether some Muslim here and there seeks it in England the law of the land precludes it.
So Muslims do not engage in polygamy because they do not seek it and even if a few wanted it they could not, but Pipes spews propaganda of some polygamy jihad breeding 12 children for every man as part of some Islamist campaign to take over the West. This is so ludicrously absurd it is outstanding that such rhetoric - even in Israel - is taken seriously.
But since when did facts, reason and logic ever guide Islamophobes and Zionists?
