Mumbai Police to closely monitor Orkut & other social networking sites

Google's social networking site Orkut is facing legal problems in India. Firstly, it faced charges for spreading anti-Indian words on Internet. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in Aurangabad bench of Bombay High Court on this issue.

Then, Subodh Balsaraf, a Thane resident has also had gone to the court against the Orkut for running an anti-Shivaji community on its site. The Pune police have been blocked Orkut after the violence reported in the city.

Now, it's turn of Mumbai police. Mumbai Police has planned to closely monitor the content and the members of the fan clubs of dons of Mumbai underworld on social networking websites such as Orkut.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kamlakar said that

nobody has complained against the communities running by Orkut. We just want to restrict the misuse of these sites by organised crime syndicates.

There are eight fan clubs devoted to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and one each dedicated to Chhota Rajan, Chhota Shakeel and Abu Salem on Orkut alone.
