Mugabe's Penchant For Murderers, Liars & Rapists

In 1993, Robert Mugabe climbed up onto his little public speaking box and told the world that: “What an abomination, a rottenness of culture, real decadence of culture. [Homosexuals are] repugnant to my human conscience... immoral and repulsive... Lower than pigs and dogs... Animals in the jungle are better than these people because at least they know that this is a man or a woman... I do not believe they have any rights at all.”

And he never ceases in giving us his opinion on anything - even if we never asked for it in the first place.

But I do note that whilst Mugabe may makes noises about his abhorrence of gays and lesbians, he has a penchant for rubbing shoulders with murderers, liars and rapists.

To begin with, let us not forget that Mugabe baulked at sending the first President of Zimbabwe, Canaan Banana, to jail for sodomy. If Mugabe hates what he sees as sexual deviance so much, why did he decide that Banana deserved a lesser ounishment?

Within his security network there is an individual that goes by the name of Joseph Mwale who is ‘regarded as the most violent criminal in Zimbabwe’.

“Joseph Mwale, is still free despite his alleged involvement in several violent incidents in Manicaland and his alleged role in the murder of two MDC activists who were campaigning for MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai. Witnesses say Mwale and two other ruling party thugs set Tichaona Chiminya and Talent Mabika on fire after beating them with iron bars during the 2000 elections. The police were accused of watching the incident then pretending to make a wrong turn instead of pursuing Mwale and his gang. Mwale is an intelligence operative in Robert Mugabe’s office and it is widely believed this is why the police will not touch him.”

Even if Mwale is innocent, surely there is still a need for him to be proved innocent of a court of law? Just as Mugabe and his various senior loyalists were convinced of Roy Bennett’s guilt and the case was taken to court, so should Mwale - but his close ties with Mugabe seem to protect him from such an event.

Strange how Mugabe is happy to be in cahoots with a suspected murderer, but stands ‘on principle’ when it comes to gays and lesbians.

Further to this, Mugabe has two leaders of the war veterans - neither of which participated in the chimurenga (the Rhodesian bush war). Joseph Chinotimba was a municipal policeman in the then capital of Salisbury during the war, whilst Jabulani Sibanda is too young to have fought.

The fact that neither of them participated does not deter them from pretending to be something they are not.

The security chiefs in Zimbabwe state that they will not salute someone who has no ‘chimurenga credentials’ but happily rub shoulders with these two individuals, one of which has stated that he would like to be the Minister of Education. In the unlikely event that he does become a minister, would the security chiefs still not salute him?

Then there is a rapist who is a religious leader in Zimbabwe who was pardoned by Mugabe after having been sentenced to a lengthy term in jail. In celebration, the religious leader threw a serious party in Chitungwiza which quickly became a drunken, drug-laden sexy orgy…

"Chitungwiza has never seen anything like it before. Sex, drugs and free booze were the order of the day at self-styled prophet Godfrey Nzira’s week-long homecoming party.

Nzira, a convicted rapist, was celebrating his pardon by President Robert Mugabe. Eye witnesses said trucks delivered beer and the faithful, vapositori, helped themselves to the illegal mbanje*, while the celebration deteriorated into a sexual orgy at night.

Nzira killed two cattle a day to feed the hordes who attended, and declared that his war against Mugabe’s perceived enemies had just begun. Among those present were senior ZANU PF officials Webster Shamu, Minister of Information and Publicity, and Attorney General Johannes Tomana.

The party at the shrine nestled deep in the indigenous trees adjacent to the Harare-Seke highway started on April 19 and continued until Easter Monday. The entire location reverberated to music from the likes of Alick Macheso and Tongai Moyo spiced up with the music of Mbare Chimurenga.

Selling beer is by no means a new phenomenon for the ailing prophet, who is a former employee of the National Breweries, now Delta. In his prime as a prophet before he joined ZANU PF in the 90s, Nzira ran a shebeen in Seke Unit O.

"We had a party of a lifetime and there was nothing religious about the party. It was a homecoming party for Nzira but for us it was a way of killing time with free beer and free food," said a reveller.

Some even left the beer halls at Makoni Shopping centre, less that 500 metres away from the shrine, to enjoy the free-flowing beer - which was accompanied by mbanje for those who wished to indulge themselves in the illegal drug.

But the scale of the beer drinking binge at a religious shrine left many deeply shocked. They said it was a "sacrilege that demeaned the shrine"."

I find it quite shocking that the man that represents the courts that would have prosecuted Nzira attended the party. Johannes Tomana, the Attorney-General, and the man that attempted to hoodwink a court that a simple trench digger was an IT specialist during the Roy Bennett trial, and escaped any punishment... yes, he was there - no doubt partaking in the booze, the drugs and probably the sideshow...

The fact that the party - if you can call it that - was to see home a convicted rapist pardoned by Mugabe makes the whole things very difficult to swallow or even accept. There is no question that he was convicted and there is no question that he was pardoned - but that the pardon came from someone who uses death as an every day threat against the people of Zimbabwe, makes the whole story even more disgusting.

Beer, drugs, sex and a forgiven rapist - that must be a new recipe for ZANU PF politics. And they are welcome to it...
