Mugabe To Get Cozy With Cameron & Clegg?

POLITICS. .

I am sure that if he could, Mugabe would happily dance on the grave of the Labour party in the United Kingdom.

"Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's ZANU PF party believe the arrival of UK Conservative David Cameron at No 10 Downing Street presents an opportunity for bilateral re-engagement.

Political sources say some ZANU PF officials believe a Conservative government will be more receptive than its Labor predecessor to the argument often advanced by Mr Mugabe that the British government failed to keep a pledge made during the pre-independence 1979 Lancaster House talks to provide financial support for land reform.

But political commentator George Mkhwanazi said ZANU PF should not start celebrating the Conservative takeover in London as the Tories are unlikely to make a sharp turn where Britain's Zimbabwe policy is concerned.

There have been many conflicting reports as to a secret deal sealed between Mr Mugabe's liberation movement and others and the Conservative government then led by Margaret Thatcher as to support for land reform."

It was the Conservative party that facilitated the hand-over of Rhodesia to Mugabe. Whilst I support neither ZANU PF nor the Conservatives, I do believe that Mugabe has now been seen for the monster he is, and that any Tory support would be very badly placed.

Just yesterday, the new Foreign Secretary, former Tory leader William Hague, made a statement on Zimbabwe and Mugabe: "My Rt Hon Friend the Leader of the Opposition spoke to Botswana's Foreign Minister yesterday, who has called for a ban on fuel supplies to the Zimbabwean Army and Police. We hope that the government will lend its support to proposals like this which target the regime, and urge African countries to implement them. In our view, this should also involve a clear message to Mugabe from as many African nations as possible that he must now step aside, backed by the threat of action if he does not."

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Mr Mugabe!

Mugabe must realise that he is no longer dealing with Margaret Thatcher and has already proved to the world that he is not the benevolent leader he proclaims to be.

To summarise, Mugabe's allegations that the English have not stood up to their side of the Lancaster House Agreement of 1979 can easily be refuted. That agreement provided for land reform under a 'willing buyer - willing seller' basis. The vast majority of landowners stripped of their farms did not do so willingly - and in some cases this included the murder of the farmer.

Enough said.

I rather think that Mugabe's hints that he would rather deal with a Conservative government in England are just wishful thinking.

And he believes that if he repeats it often enough he might see himself in London shaking hands with Cameron and Clegg and having dinner with the Queen.

I don't think so!

"Between 1980 and 1989, Britain provided 47 million pounds sterling to fund land reform program under which the new government in Harare was given first priority to purchase all farms sold by commercial farmers.

But Britain pulled the plug on the program charging misuse of funds by Zimbabwean officials. President Mugabe has long charged that Britain reneged on its commitments, and targeted Harare for aggressively pursuing land reform.

In 1979, Margaret Thatcher banned her envoy to what was then Rhodesia from meeting Robert Mugabe, refusing to talk "with terrorists until they become prime ministers," files released Wednesday showed."

I rather think that the coalition government led by Cameron and Clegg have got a lot more on their plates than worrying about Mugabe right now. I reckon it will not be long before we hear Mugabe venting his spleen at Cameron because he has not been recognised...

Mugabe's attempt at 'supporting' the Conservatives into power is just a feeble attempt at gaining a few brownie points, and I sincerely hope that the Conservatives are aware of the duplicity that Mugabe represents.
