MQM Breaks Coalition, Endangers Future of Democratic Government
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), an important ally of the existing democratic government of Pakistan, has formally ended the coalition with the government through an application submitted to the National Assembly on Monday, January 03, 2011. This is being regarded as equal to dropping a bomb on PPP government since the latter has now lost its majority in the parliament.

The MQM announced ending their coalition with the government on December 27 after the government raised the prices of petroleum in the country. MQM demanded the government to take back the orders of increasing the petroleum prices since it added enormously to the financial burden of the public. Failing to get the government to withdraw its decision to raise the petroleum prices, MQM has finally ended it coalition with the government and decided to sit on opposition benches.
With the majority lost in parliament to opposition, the future of the PP government has been endangered and the country’s political crisis has taken a dangerously deep plunge. Will the democratic government be able to complete its constitutional term of 5 years? This is the big question that only time would answer for the people of Pakistan and the world. So far, MQM is assuring that it doesn’t mean to destabilize the existing government. The government, on the other hands, still hopes that MQM will reconsider its decision to sit in the opposition.
