Condemning attacks on Railway Recruitment Board examinees from northern India in and around Mumbai by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena activists,Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav called the MNS chief Raj Thackeray a ‘mental case.’
In a turf war between MNS and Shiv Sena, some Shiv Sena activists also attacked the examinees in an effort to display one-upmanship in the Marathi cause.
This is not the first time that MNS and Shiv Sena activists have gone on a rampage. In fact, they attacked taxi drivers and vegetable vendors only a couple of months ago and sent them packing. They also launched a scathing attack on Bollywood superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan who are from Uttar Pradesh and Delhi respectively.
These kinds of attacks throw an open challenge to the government in power in Maharashtra. The government’s failure to check repeated incidents of this nature sends out a wrong message to the whole nation.
One wonders why the MNS and Shiv Sena wants to create insecurity for Maharashtrians outside Maharashtra. There may be method in their madness. And, they may coax themselves into believing that they would be able to rid Maharashtra of non-Maharashtrian by terrorizing them.
This is what happens when you have a ‘Maharashtra’ within ‘Bharat’ Rashtra. They think Maharashtra is bigger and more important than India. The spirit of nationalism is lacking here.
Whoever thinks that this kind of hooliganism will go unattended is making a big mistake. Unfortunately, the people who are indulging in these activities fail to realize or are arrogant enough to ignore the fact that their actions could be counter-productive.
Raj Thackeray, Bal Thackeray and Udbhav Thackeray may be able to ensure their personal security. But, how can they ensure the security of a common Maharashtrian when he moves out of Maharashtra?
One can understand the motivation of MNS and Shiv Sena leaders in these attacks because they are trying to defend their turfs and they stand to gain politically. But, what is motivating their activists to work against the long term interests of their fellow-Maharahtrians? Do they think that this nonsense would be tolerated by those who have been the victims of thes bitter experiences, indefinitely?
