Militants turn into mass rapists in Manipur
Militancy in Northeast India was fuelled by popular support. The cause was noble - sovereignty because of negligence by the Centre. Those times have gone ages back. Now militant outfits have become organized criminals - banditry, thuggery and drug running has become the main business. The people gradually shunned them. However, they continued to thrive because of lack of employment amongst the Northeastern youth.
Now, the militancy seems to have taken a deviant twist just like it happened in Kashmir. With the power that their Kalashnikovs gotten them, they have turned it into vulnerable soft targets not only for extortion but also to satisfy carnal urges.
News just filtering in suggests that in January this year, a group of terrorists in Manipur from the outfit called United National Liberation Front (UNLF) entered into a village called Lungthulein in Churachandpur district and handpicked twenty-one fairer girls from the village after beating up the males and raped them en masse. Amongst the ones raped was one girl who was barely thirteen years old.
This despicable act of sexual assault on women adds another black chapter in the saga of militancy in the region that has now become a campaign of terror, criminal activities, serial killings and rape.
