To improve the quality of security in what is considered Latin America's wealthiest city, Mayor Maurico Fernandez announced he has already met with and is working with U.S. agents.
Without offering details, the controversial mayor of San Pedro, Nuevo Leon, stated in two weeks, he will announce new strategies for improving the quality of the San Pedro police force.
"Last week we had a meeting with several U.S. agents, we are working on it still. I have not come to a definite conclusion yet, but in a few weeks you will be hearing about major changes regarding the security of San Pedro.", said Mayor Fernandez.
Although Fernandez refused to name the U.S. agency he is working with, he did state the meeting was at his request and was private.
"We are focusing on the means of obtaining more intelligence information for San Pedro.
I have been meeting and speaking with the military, with Americans, I am discussing ideas with entrepreneurs, with many people, to see how and what we can do, that is transparent, open and does not create doubt or suspicion."
This last quote, regarding the need for transparency and trust, comes after the now defunct Groupo Rudo: informants who were paid by the Councilman in exchange for providing information to help identify and capture suspects.
At least two of these informants, Alberto Mendoza Contreras, nicknamed "El Chico Malo", and Rafael Valdez Aviñaga, alias La Pantera, were arrested by authorities, who linked them to the Beltran Leyva cartel.
