Mayawati's shame, India's shame!
The extravagant 25th anniversary celebrations of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with blue colour flags would have passed off as just another one of those celebrations our politicians are so fond of indulging in. But adorning Mayawati with a garland made of Rs.1000/-notes ( totalling approximately 5 crores, according to media claims)is nothing short of a shameful act. It is UP's hour of shame as well as India's! While party members’ denials later that it was only Rs.21 lakhs and not 5 crores do not make the garland any more alluring!

If ever there was such a gross and indecent display of felicitation of a chief minister of one of the poorest regions of the world (According to one statistics, 8% of the poor of the world reside in UP) it is this. It is a scandalous, unwarranted and cruel joke on the poor people of UP. If Mayawati and her cohorts wanted to really celebrate the silver jubilee of their party, they would have distributed those Rs.1000/- notes to the poor and needy. They could have organised a food distribution scheme, planned a housing scheme, a massive employment scheme, in short anything that would have helped the poor of the state.
While the IT department has ordered a probe into this “garland of notes”, Mayawati is possibly laughing all the way to the bank!
I am incensed and appalled that this is happening in free democratic India. Have Mayawati and her party taken collective leave of their senses or is this a “Marie Antoinette” happening? If indeed it is the latter, I hope Mayawati meets with the same fate that Marie Antoinette did. If she knows French history just a little, she might understand how her callous attitude could raise the ire of a starving, downtrodden people that UP is home to and that she could well meet with the same fate as Marie Antoinette. This is the 21st century but strange and just things do happen here as they did then. Is the chief minister listening?!
