Mawazine 2010 Opens in Rabat
The ninth Mawazine Rhythms of the World festival opened again on Friday with the participation of Moroccan stars and international artists from fifty countries. All Moroccans seem to forget about the tragic incident that happened in the same festival last year when a fence collapsed under the pressure of the over crowded old stadium where the concerts took place causing about 60 victims 11 of them were killed. I was expecting the authorities to honour the memory of those who were killed in the Festival last year because of the amateurish organization that led to this tragedy but unfortunately common Moroccans are still considered like a second or maybe third class citizens and their blood is worth nothing according to “them”. Very few people are concerned there could be a repetition of last year's tragedy whereas the majority seems to be careless. For those Moroccans who are excited about the festival and don’t care about their brothers and sisters who were killed and wounded last year, this is some information concerning Mawazine 2010 you may want to know …

Since most of the local musicians were excluded from the previous festivals, the national music will be represented by many singers namely Abdelhadi Belkhayat, El Bachir Abdou, Fatima-Zahara, Mohamed El Ghaoui, Abderrahim Essouiri, Hamid El Kasri and Aïcha Tachinouite. Hassan Nafali, chairman of Moroccan Alliance for Culture and Arts, highlighted the variety and richness of the festival this year, indicating that the festival focused on cultural diversity without excluding Moroccan artists for a change. The festival features African stars namely Mahmoud Ahmed and Almayahu Eshete (Ethiopia), Sheikh Tidiane Seck (Mali), Ismaël Lo (Senegal), Alpha Blondy (Ivory Coast), and Angélique Kidjo (Benin).
This big world music festival will host international headliners such as Elton John, Julio Iglesias, Carlos Santana, Sting, and Mika.
