A man was sentenced Tuesday to 50 years to life in prison for killing a transient and scattering his body parts around San Diego County.

A jury convicted 62-year-old Gerald Nash in March of first-degree murder in the death last year of 57-year-old Allen Hawes, who used to visit an adult video store where Nash worked.

Judge Frederic Linc said Nash should spend the rest of his life in jail for carefully planning the murder.

During the trial, Nash testified he did not kill Hawes and that he had befriended him and given him food, money and places to store belongings.

Prosecutors told the jury that Nash meticulously planned the murder, recorded those plans in notebooks and even had a homemade silencer for a gun. A deputy medical examiner testified Hawes died of a gunshot wound and not the dismemberment.

Authorities said Hawes’ torso was found along a riverbank on Feb. 26, 2007. A day later, other body parts were found along highways.
