Man Breaks Off Marriage After He Discovers Fiancee Hid Beard Under Niqab
I suppose the niqab and burqa could come in handy for certain women. For some, wearing the niqab probably has more to do with their physical appearance than adhering to the norms of Islamic modesty. After all, an unattractive woman can cover up everything but her eyes, and not feel as though the world is looking at her out of pity or horror. This becomes ultra problematic when the woman has been pawned off in an arranged marriage, and the husband-to-be has no idea what lies beneath those veils and robes. Although physical appearance should be a nominal reason for marrying someone, and what lies within a person is far more important than what lies without, some kind of physical attraction is an important aspect of marriage. Ask the Arab ambassador who decided he wanted out of the marriage contract with his physician fiancee when the veil was finally lifted.

An Arab ambassador said he decided to call off his wedding immediately after he discovered that his wife-to-be, who wears a niqab, was bearded and cross-eyed.The ambassador claimed that the bride's mother deceived his mother, when she went to see his Gulf national wife-to-be, by showing her pictures of the bride's sister
Sources close to the case told Gulf News that the groom only saw the woman a few times. He did not realise that she had a beard because she wore the niqab the few times he met her, added the source."Every time the couple met, the bride would do her best not to reveal her entire face. After the ambassador and the woman, who is a physician, signed the marriage contract, the groom was sitting with the bride… he claimed to the Sharia court officials that when he wanted to kiss his wife-to-be, he discovered that she was bearded and cross-eyed as well," claimed the source.
He then proceeded to sue the woman's parents for moral and emotional pain, in addition to demanding they repay him for all the Dh500,000 he spent on gifts for his no longer future-wife. The bride, in turn asked to be paid alimony. The story becomes even more ludicrous:
Gulf News also learnt that the ambassador requested the Sharia court to refer the Gulf national woman to a specialist to have her examined for hormonal deficiencies. The court referred the bride to a specialist who countered the ambassador's claims and reported that she did not suffer any hormonal problems.
The court dismissed all charges.
They always say truth is stranger than fiction, and this certainly is a very strange story, indeed. It's laughable if it wasn't so painful. The woman was totally humiliated, but that was the fault of both her parents, the woman herself, and last but not least the social norms of the society. A man and woman should at least see each other before they marry, to prevent situations like this from happening.
