Maldive Police File Case Against Man Who Claimed He Was "Non-Muslim" In Spite Of Reversion
The Maldive Islands, an island republic in the Indian Ocean, also happens to be 100% Muslim. Although a multi-party democracy (a relatively recent occurrence,)the only official religion accepted there is Islam, and Sharia law is practiced. No other religions are allowed to be practiced openly, and those who do are liable to be prosecuted under the law of the land.

But not only are people not allowed to practice other religions, even those who practice no religion at all, Atheists and others, are persecuted. Take Mohamed Nazim who was either very courageous or terribly foolish to claim he was a "Maldivian but not a Muslim" during a Q&A after a lecture on May 28 with Indian speaker Zakir Naik, from the Islamic Research Foundation based out of Mumbai.
Reports of what occurred after his statement differ greatly, other than the fact that both sides admit he was attacked by some in the angry crowd of 11,000, many of whom called for his death. Thereafter, some say he was arrested, others say the police took him under police protection. What we do know for sure is that the media called for his death if he didn't revert to Islam, and the 38-year-old wound up being forced to undergo three days of "religious counselling" (aka brainwashing) by the Islamic Ministry. Nazim then made a public apology in front of a bunch of journalists, probably those same ones who called for his death, and would no doubt have gleefully witnessed his execution. He was then forced to profess his faith (Shahada) on TV.
All the while lawyers fought over what to do with him. All because of his terribly evil, unforgivable statement that he was a non-Muslim.
While some local lawyers earlier claimed that Nazim is eligible for punishment both by Maldives laws and Islamic Shari’a, others argued that only Shari’a law could be evoked on him. Some of them also noted that Nazim’s citizenship could be revoked.
And in spite of having recanted and 'reverted' back to Islam, police still went ahead and filed a case against Nazim with the prosecutor's office.
And they say there is no compulsion in Islam. Yeah, right.
