More than two-thirds of lawmakers in Mauritania’s parliament have signed a declaration in favor of last week’s army-led coup.
The declaration asks the international community to recognize the new military-run regime.
The parliament’s overwhelming support for the bloodless coup that ousted the African nation’s democratically elected president contrasts with the international community’s sharp condemnation of last week’s takeover.
The African Union has frozen Mauritania’s membership, while both the U.S. and France have canceled their aid to the West African nation.
